The 5 Zones of the Kitchen

The use that we give to our kitchens has changed, and now we have more numerous and diverse needs that modern kitchens have to be able to satisfy. Whether we are few at home or many of us. In everyday life or on special occasions.

To be magnificent, a kitchen should not only have a beautiful design. It must also be easy to clean, resistant and, above all, functional. But what does it really mean and how can you achieve great functionality when designing a new kitchen? We offer you ideas and inspiration to get an optimal design that makes a difference in your daily life in your kitchen.

You may have heard about the “work triangle” of the kitchen: cooking area, refrigerator and countertop. In the past, this worked as a good starting point when designing most of the kitchens. Nowadays, the oven and the cooking plate are usually separated and we have many more appliances and appliances. Many people want a place to eat in the kitchen or as a prolongation of it.

We also prefer to be oriented towards the room, for example, with an island or with a U shaped kitchen with the counter in the room. In many homes, the kitchen and the living room are merged and become the place where we will spend most of the time we are at home.

5 work zones

Currently there are five working areas that are closely connected, which are defined by the situation of the different elements of the kitchen. The way in which the zones are placed in relation to each other greatly influences the efficiency with which you and your family can move and work in the kitchen.

  1. Cleaning area
  2. Preparation area
  3. Cooking zone
  4. Food area
  5. Zone without food

1. Cleaning area

The sink is the central point of the cleaning area. If you are right-handed, the dishwasher should be placed to the left of the sink. In this way, it will not cost you any effort to remove or wash the remains of food with your right hand and put the dishes in the dishwasher with the left, in a cohesive movement and without having to place it before on the countertop.

2. Preparation area

In kitchens with an optimal design, the preparation area is placed to the right of the cleaning area. In it you have countertop space to cut, chop, knead, etc. Place the utensils that you will use to prepare the ingredients in the drawers and in the high and low cabinets, as close as possible to the preparation area.

3. Cooking zone

The area surrounding the cooking plate should be designed according to the needs you have when you fry or cook food in the kitchen. The cooking area should be located next to the preparation area, and in it you must have pots, pans and other important cooking utensils at your fingertips. The oven also belongs to the cooking zone, but it does not have to occupy a central place in the kitchen, since normally we only use it 4 or 5 times a week.

4. Food area

The food area is the area surrounding the refrigerator and should be close to the cooking area. In this way, you can easily access the perishable food from the freezer or the refrigerator and the non-perishable food from the cupboards in the area while you make your meal. A useful advice is to place the refrigerator closer to the center than you thought. And we open and close this appliance an average of 36 times a day.

5. Zone without food

The area without food is usually the one in which we keep extra household items, kitchen appliances, trays and other utensils. Normally they are things that you do not use daily and, therefore, they do not have to occupy a very central place in the kitchen.

IDEA!

A system for recycling in a surprisingly practical and useful way

Instead of placing the garbage can under the sink, we recommend that you place a practical extractable system between the cleaning area and the preparation area. In this way, two people can work in both areas of the kitchen at the same time and use the garbage can without obstructing or hindering the other. A small improvement with which you get a surprisingly large difference.
